Hotel near Mount Vernon Holiday Activities
One of the preeminent attractions within easy reach of The Alexandrian, Mount Vernon attracts tourists from all around the world to the historic 500-acre estate of George Washington. The former home of the first president of the United States—which we recently profiled here at the hotel blog—welcomes visitors all year-round to its magnificent 18th-century mansion, multiple outbuildings, and sprawling, beautifully landscaped grounds. It also hosts events all around the calendar, but the holiday season in particular comes packed with seasonal festivities you won’t want to miss!
Here are two standout holiday traditions at Mount Vernon well worth taking in while you enjoy the merry ambience and Autograph Collection luxury of The Alexandrian here in Old Town!
Mount Vernon by Candlelight
Take a guided evening mosey around Mount Vernon by flickering candlelight and lantern-light. The Mount Vernon by Candlelight experience stages amid the yuletide décor (and nibbles) at the Ford Orientation Center, then leaves the present day behind for a fascinating and atmospheric walk-through of the estate’s historic area. That includes a face-to-face meet-and-greet with none other than Martha Washington and several other Mount Vernon “residents.”
You can keep the fun alive after the tour by joining in the 18th-century dancing in the Greenhouse, indulging in some cookies and warm cider to the soundtrack of live caroling, and wrapping up with live music in the Education Center Lobby.
Mount Vernon by Candlelight runs November 23rd, 24th, and 30th as well as December 1st, 7th, 8th, and 16th.
Christmas Illuminations at Mount Vernon
An all-out Potomac holiday party awaits at Christmas Illuminations, underway at Mount Vernon on December 14th and 15th. The main event is a hearty fireworks display incorporating some classic holiday tune-age, but you can expand the experience with a pre-pyrotechnics tour of the estate sound tracked by local choirs. First Virginia Regiment re-enactors, 18th-century dance instructors, and the First Couple themselves will be on hand to welcome you to the proceedings.
You can also enjoy live demos of old-school chocolate-making and warm up beside a cheery bonfire. And along with the Museum and Education Center, the Shops at Mount Vernon stay open into the evening for Christmas Illuminations, providing an ideal opportunity to nab a few last-minute holiday gifts.
You can purchase tickets for both the Mount Vernon Mansion tour and the fireworks or the fireworks show alone. Christmas Illuminations begins at 5:30 PM on its two December evenings.
