Fall Activities & Fun in Alexandria, VA
Fall’s a delicious time to visit Old Town Alexandria and avail yourself of our Autograph Collection hospitality here at The Alexandrian. Besides the general ambience and usual suite of historical, cultural, and culinary attractions on offer, the season also comes stacked with festivals and other special events, for which our centrally located King Street hotel provides the perfect accommodations! Here’s a sample of what you can expect this fall in the happenings department in and around Alexandria, Virginia.
Fall at Mount Vernon
George Washington’s historic estate is a top Alexandria-area attraction all year round, but things really crank up in the autumn. You’ve got multiple seasonal events to enjoy, including the old-timey arts, crafts, and entertainment of the Colonial Market & Fair (September 15th and 16th), the swanky soiree of the Fall Wine Festival & Sunset Tour (October 5th through the 7th), and the Pioneer Farm fun and games of Fall Harvest Family Days (October 20th and 21st), to name a few highlights from the Mount Vernon autumn calendar.
Some 200 artists and artisans from greater D.C. and across the country will be showing off their works—everything from paintings and photographs to apparel and jewelry—at the 16th Annual Alexandria King Street Art Festival, running from 10 AM to 7 PM on Saturday, September 15th and 10 AM to 5 PM on Sunday, September 16th. The action’s underway along (you guessed it) King Street between Washington and Union streets, with some subsidiary (or should we say “suds-sidiary”) pleasures on tap at the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Beer & Wine Torpedo Garden.
Alexandria is transforming its historic Potomac waterfront via a new greenspace at the foot of King Street and its Portside in Old Town programming series, and all of that’ll be celebrated October 12th through the 14th at the Portside in Old Town Festival. Enjoy live music, a waterfront beer garden (courtesy of Alexandria’s own Port City Brewing Company), a Pizzeria Paradiso pop-up, an LED light performance, exotic car show, and free Saturday and Sunday tours of the magnificent tallship Godspeed. The festivities extend to the Torpedo Factory Art Center with gallery talks, studio tours, and hands-on art activities.
One of the signature flavors of fall in our neck of the woods is a crisp sip of craft cider, and there’s no better occasion to indulge in that age-old pleasure than at the Alexandria Cider Festival, which this year takes place Saturday, November 17th at Lloyd House. More than a dozen Virginia cideries will be offering their products to taste, and local food trucks will be on hand for the fun as well.
