4th of July Events & Hotel near Washington DC

What better place to celebrate the USA’s birthday than in the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C.? And with nearby accommodations at The Alexandrian, you’re all set to enjoy the full array of supersize festivities!

Here are some of D.C.’s 4th of July traditions that’ll be at your beck and call with a stay at our Autograph Collection hotel in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, just minutes away from the capital.

The National Independence Day Parade

Beginning at 11:45 AM, the National Independence Day Parade will proceed with plenty of pomp, circumstance, and fanfare down Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th streets. Quite the patriotic spectacle!

A Capitol Fourth

One of the most beloved Independence Day traditions in D.C. and for viewers all across the nation (and for servicemen and women around the world, via the American Forces Network) is the Capitol Fourth concert, which in its 38th annual edition will once again be hosted by John Stamos. Held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the show begins at 8 PM and includes the National Symphony Orchestra’s rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture—and, of course, culminates in the most awe-inspiring fireworks show in the country.

The 4th of July Washington Nationals Baseball Game

Per tradition, the Washington Nationals will be playing a baseball game at Nationals Park on the 4th. This year the Independence Day matchup is with the Boston Red Sox, so get ready for some topnotch America’s Game action!

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Begun back in 1967, the free Smithsonian Folklife Festival is another cherished 4th of July tradition, serving as a celebration of global cultures amid the splendor of the National Mall. This year’s festival, which runs June 27th through July 1st and July 4th through July 8th, pays special tribute to Armenian and Catalan culture and comes stocked with delicious food, great music, and the amazing wares of its well-known marketplace. This year’s Folklife Festival culminates on July 8th with a revival of the 1980s Sisterfire Concert, honoring female artists and activists.

Mount Vernon’s An American Celebration

Just as convenient to The Alexandrian as Washington D.C. but in the opposite direction down the Potomac, Mount Vernon—George Washington’s estate home—will also be pulling out all the stops for its annual 4th of July spectacular. Mount Vernon’s An American Celebration includes fireworks and cannons, the National Concert Band’s “Red, White and Blue” performance, and much more.

Alexandria’s 4th of July

On Saturday, July 7th, meanwhile, Alexandria throws its own Independence Day celebration: a combo gala, actually, given it also honors the city’s 269th birthday as well as the nation’s 242nd. Enjoy music by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, great refreshments, and some riverfront fireworks at Oronoco Bay Park, within walking distance of The Alexandrian!
