Summer Sippin’ – Alexandria’s Favorites for Al Fresco Drinks
Make a toast to the summer at one of Alexandria’s 30 restaurants featuring sidewalk or outdoor patio seating. Whether you’re looking to enjoy Old Town’s bustling King Street or take it easy near the Potomac River waterfront, The Alexandrian is within walking distance of some of the city’s most popular al fresco hangouts. Let’s raise a glass to some of our favorite outdoor eateries:
Vola’s Dockside Grill
This retro waterfront hideaway is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Named for Vola D. Lawson, Alexandria’s first female City Manager and beloved local figure, Vola’s features a large outdoor deck overlooking the Potomac River. Cool off and enjoy the view with a glass of frozen wine, a classic Piña Colada, or Vola’s signature Hi-Tide cocktail.
Located at our sister property, The Study at Morrison House is timeless and familiar. Escape the bustle of King Street and rest your feet at one of the intimate outdoor tables in front of this refurbished Federalist-mansion. Telling the story of a bygone era, The Study features a library of spirits like Iberian fortified wines, madeira, and sherry. Plus, enjoy live entertainment of some of the city’s best singers and musicians.
Situated on the edge of the National Harbor on the Potomac waterfront, Blackwall Hitch features stunning views of the Capitol Building and numerous national monuments. Throughout the summer, locals and visitors gather on the patio to enjoy live music ranging from rock to jazz. Plus, with an extensive beer, wine, and cocktail menu, there’s no better place to enjoy a drink as you watch boat tours and water taxis shuttle visitors between Old Town Alexandria and Washington D.C.
Virtue Feed & Grain
The historic building that houses Virtue Feed & Grain was once a feed house in the 1800s. Now a modern American tavern, this historic Alexandrian hotspot features a comfortable outdoor patio in the heart of Old Town. Need a nightcap? Virtue Feed & Grain is open nightly until 1 a.m. and features a popular late night menu including martinis, mules, margaritas, and more.
You don’t have to venture far from The Alexandrian to find amazing al fresco dining. Our onsite restaurant, Jackson 20, features a large outdoor courtyard and intimate patio perfect for sipping specialty cocktails this summer. Featuring classics with a Southern twist, try hand-crafted concoctions like the Tequila Mockingbird, Mint to Be, or our signature Jackson 20 Gin & Tonic.
